Alta Marie Layman, 86, of Berrien Springs, formerly of Eau Claire, died Sunday, September 10, 2017, at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 13, at Bowerman Funeral Home, Eau Claire, with visitation at 1 p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Caldwell Cemetery, Eau Claire. Alta was born April 5, 1931, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, the daughter of George and Mary Gunkel. In addition to caring for her family, she had been the Produce Manager for the Eau Claire store of Harding’s Friendly Markets. Her favorite pastimes included knitting, crocheting, and sewing.
Survivors include her daughter, April (Tom) Disterheft, and two sons, Mark Layman and Kevin (Debra) Layman, all of Eau Claire; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Vicky Lynn Gaunder in 1993; two sisters, Julia Odiorne and Mary Tio; and three brothers, George Gunkel Jr., Marlin Gunkel, and Robert Gunkel.
